Introducing Jenn: SpitfireMom Editorial Intern

By August 15, 2014

You know sometimes you take a chance and it pays off big? Well when I got Jenn’s email late one (sleepless baby) night I couldn’t stop thinking…this girl is special. And I was right! Jenn is that perfect mix of smarts and a bit of snark – in the best way possible of course – and Julie & I knew she’d be just right for SpitfireMom. Please welcome Jenn to Team SpitfireMom!
~ Heidi

Yes, you read that correctly, I am a Jenn with two “n”s. Why? I could be completely forthcoming and admit that my 13-year-old self simply HAD to distinguish herself from all the other 1970s-born Jennifers in the world. But the better, more fun, answer can be found in the Urban Dictionary: “As the world is so overpopulated with Jennifers, we need to be able to distinguish the cool from the evil. The only acceptable abreviation for the cool Jennifers is Jenn.” And “Fun, outgoing, insanely smart, insightful, inwardly and outwardly beautiful. Able to have an intelligent conversation while also appreciating the importance of a fun night on the town, a sexy dress and a hot pair of shoes. Values love, respect, truth and justice.” Wow. Whoever this “Jenn” is in the universe, she sounds awesome. And although I’m not confident enough to necessarily claim all of those characteristics,
I do aspire to them.

So, hi! I’m Jenn. I’m an attorney, wife, and mom to two cool boys who are 8 and 5. I’ve been at the lawyering business for 14 years now and I’m finally getting around to the realization that it was not the correct career choice for me. I’ll share my thoughts on jumping careers on another day, for now, suffice it to say that I’m exploring other possibilities. I know that it needs to be something creative, and I know I love to write, so I started meandering around the internet one night looking for opportunities when I stumbled upon a really beautiful site looking for an editorial intern. (If you didn’t already know it, Spitfiregirl is gorgeous.) And when I saw Heidi’s featured moms on the sister site, SpitfireMom, I was hooked. These are MY PEOPLE. I fired off an email before I had time to think, get scared, or second guess myself. An agonizing 9 days later, after I’d pretty much given up hope, I got a reply from Heidi. We met for coffee here in Denver and when precious Noe started to demand our attention, we walked over to Heidi’s house and finished the conversation.  Her Spitfireyness (new word!) sucked me in immediately, so here I am: your almost-40-year-old-intern.

I am passionate about a variety of things: traveling, wine, football, music, cooking, theater, home design, books, soccer, my amazing Colorado, and of course, being a mom and wife and doing the juggle and the hustle as best I can. (Case in point, all this interning stuff is being done at the end of my day job, after dinner, after homework, after bedtime. Yes, I am TIRED.) Some of my favorite blogs are:

~ SmittenKitchen – Deb Perelman is an amazing food blogger and photographer and my BFF (she just doesn’t know it yet). She also has a beautiful NYT best-selling cookbook.

~ BabySideburns – Karen unapologetically says everything that a parent wants to say at times, with absolutely no filter. This gal is not for the easily offended. You’ve been warned.

~ Suri’s Burn Book – because poking fun of celebrities and their spawn in Suri Cruise’s voice is genius.

~ Tom and Lorenzo – fashion bloggers based in Philly, they are self-proclaimed fairy godfathers to fashion-challenged celebs. I challenge you to read their critiques of the Miss Universe pageant and not laugh. Can’t be done.

And here’s some of my visual inspiration…as I was thinking about what to feature here I realized it was all about the places I’ve been.  First up, Japan:

Next, Hawaii:

And finally, Colorful Colorado:

I’m so excited to contribute to SpitfireMom. This is a seriously inspirational bunch. I’m hoping to both add to that inspiration and to continue to build some within myself. It’s wonderful to be here!
