Last month I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at Altitude Summit – a blogging and design conference in Salt Lake City. You may recall I shared a little bit about keynote speaker Martha Stewart and her advice on the juggle and hustle, here. It was the first time away from my then 6 month old daughter Noe and only second time away from my 4 year old son, Evan. Gosh, just saying that out loud makes me realize I need to get out of town more…but I digress.
Motherhood – and the juggle of balancing a career and a family – was a popular theme at Alt. It came up often in conversations at breakout sessions or dinner – how pregnancy (there were a LOT of baby bumps as well!) may have forced you to reconsider your career choices, or starting a business to have more time with your children. To moms leaving the party early to pump; to keynote speakers Martha Stewart to Joy Cho – who said
“We don’t balance work and motherhood ~ We Juggle”
~ Joy Cho
While it’s probably not surprising that a community of writers, designers, photographers and crafters would embrace motherhood, what was surprising was the number of moms with children in tow. There had to have been about 6-8 mothers with their children, many babies around Noe’s age. I won’t lie…I *may* have stalked them a little as I was missing my little girl. Now while I personally A. needed a break (can we say mommy time??) and B. would have had a difficult time concentrating with a wee one in tow, I was so impressed with the cool-as-cucumber demeanor the moms and babes displayed. These women are true SpitfireMoms, even if they didn’t know it.
So kudos to the team at Alt Summit for making women and mothers feel so welcome. And bravo to the moms with kids in tow!
Question – would you bring your little one to a conference? If so, why or why not?
And if you’re a blogger talking about motherhood, we want to hear from you! Tell us your story of juggle and hustle!
