Curse the summer stomach flu. I spent all weekend cooped up inside because each of my two precious little petri dishes were infected with it. Scratch that – it wasn’t just my weekend – it was four long days, Friday through Sunday, because the darlings couldn’t be sick at the same time. No. They staggered it. So that’s four days of summer GONE FOREVER. Call me dramatic, but it was a gorgeous, perfect, lovely weekend here in Colorado. Hot and sunny during the day and cool in the evenings. Perfect cocktail weather. In the spirit of optimism, I’ve pulled together some delicious and, well, pretty summer cocktails to try. Assuming next weekend isn’t sabotaged by germs. Fingers crossed!
The Thai-Basil Sangria delivers a new twist on an old summer favorite. White wine, freshly squeezed OJ, a splash of brandy, and simple syrup jazzed up with fresh basil sprigs. (I promise this one will be the most involved recipe. The rest are easy-peasy.)
Smitten Kitchen’s Blackberry Gin Fizz – Fat, juicy blackberries, freshly squeezed lime juice, club soda and your favorite gin. Perfection.
Nothing says summer like watermelons, and it seems perfectly natural for this spicy-food-lover to add a slice of jalapeño to make things interesting. This delightful combination is brought to you by a Denver favorite – The Kitchen Next Door’s Watermelon Cocktail.
The classic Pimm’s Cup is like stuffing a garden into a glass. Veggies, fruits and herbs. It’s practically a health drink! (And it’s beautiful to look at!)
Finally, I’m a sucker for any drink involving lime and ginger beer, and the Dark and Stormy fits that bill perfectly.
Enjoy your summer, SpitfireMoms! May no stomach viruses darken your doorways!
